Pelham Youth Rugby’s U15 team began the spring tackle season as they ended the fall competition–by winning. Pelham, reigning champions of the Metro NY Youth Rugby League, defeated Rockaway 5 tries to 1 in a home game at Ingalls Field.
The U15s demonstrated the surging runs, smooth passing game and tough tackling that has been their hallmark. Solid defending kept Rockaway from the try zone more than once and limited the visitors to a single score.
North Westall was named “forward of the match” for his play upfront, while Luke Persanis was picked as “back of the match” for his handling of the ball throughout the game.
“To be honest it was a tough call,” said Pelham Director of Rugby Matt Persanis. “They all played really well!”
The U13 team came up short against a strong and large Rockaway team. They lost 6 tries to 2 in the first match of the afternoon, but fought hard on defense in the second half. The kids never gave up.
Sofia Imperato and Jean Vigroux were were named “players of the match” for the U13 team.
Vigroux drove up the middle with key runs, scoring both of the team’s tries, and worked hard to shut down the center of Rockaway attack. Imperato ran the ball up the outside for several long gains and made important tackles all over the field.
This Sunday, the Pelham Youth Rugby teams play at Brooklyn on Pier 5. The U13 team kicks off at 4 pm and the U15s at 5.
